That time I chose to split instead of braking

not sure I would consider that an average lane splitting situation - but I completely agree - perfect move, get the heck away from the folks that don’t know what they are doing and putting you at risk.

Looks like he was aiming for the freeway. Another case of waiting too long to get in the necessary lane. He could have taken the next crossover and entered the freeway from the westbound side to make up for this.

But instead of owning up to his mistake and accepting the 90-second penalty, he made a second mistake: he braked sharply, despite there being traffic behind him.

You know your bike better than I do, but it doesn’t look to me like he gave you enough room to brake. Your maneuver doesn’t look like lane splitting to me. It looks like an emergency/evasive maneuver and I think I would have done the same thing.

Agree with you that it is not a traditional splitting situation. It is lane sharing, for sure, and my main goal was to show a situation where being prepared to split added a safety margin. If I’d not been prepared to split, I would have either had to brake or swerve into the left lane and cause who knows what havoc for those drivers. Neither option is a good one and I’d hate to be the poor n00b who doesn’t see the open space!!

Admittedly I’m not a big fan of lane splitting, mostly because I’ve seen more people abuse it than otherwise, by going way too fast for traffic conditions and also ripping off people’s mirrors. Not to mention how unpredictable many drivers are. I see people make stupid moves and lane changes often enough with no signal or warning of any kind that it would terrify me to lane split myself.

That being said your move was perfect and I would have done the same thing (I hope). What that black car did was stupid and dangerous.
